FAQ About Drones and Drone Accessories
Drones have been rapidly growing in popularity recently, and it's easy to see why. Drones, which include UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), are extremely useful in different ways and are poised to affect many aspects of our daily lives. Read on for some more information about these cutting-edge devices and what you'll need to know to get one for yourself.
What are drones?
Remember those RC (remote controlled) vehicles you used to play with as kids? Drones are kind of like those, but taken to a whole new level. A remote controlled (RC) drone is a robot that you can, well, control remotely. Some drones fly, some zip along the ground, and some can leap in the air like an over-caffeinated cat.
How do drones work?
Drones are controlled through wireless technology, usually Bluetooth or built-in WiFi. Some drones come with their own controllers, while others can be navigated using your smartphone or tablet. Most commercially-available flying drones include a number of propellers (a "quadcopter" has 4 propellers) that allow it to soar through the air.
Some drone models are equipped with cameras, so you can enjoy incredible views that you'd never see otherwise. Others are able to carry a camera you already own.
What can you do with drones?
Flying a drone is just plain fun, but drones can be used for more than simple entertainment. A camera-equipped drone can capture incredible bird's-eye views (perfect for photographers and filmmakers), scientists can use them to gather hard-to-collect data, and rescue services have employed drones to help people in need. The possibilities are nearly endless.
What are the types of drones I can choose from?
There's a wide variety of drone models, so the perfect drone for you depends on your budget and what you want to use it for. Check out our Drones category page to see drones that are ideal for specific purposes.
