Maxing out the iPhone 12

They don’t get bigger than this

For Apple, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the largest phone screen the company has ever made. Its 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel is slightly larger than the previous iPhone 11 Pro Max’s 6.5-inch display. That extra room also comes with thinner bezels for a phone that, while bigger on screen size, is actually not as much in its body.

The screen is a gorgeous canvas for all the content you like to watch, courtesy of the OLED panel’s ability to show deeper black levels and higher contrast. HDR10 and Dolby Vision will show more detail in shadows, highlights and colours on all content supporting those standards.

You can also feel a little more secure about the screen’s resilience. Both the front and back are made of a tougher glass called Ceramic Shield that’s four times more resistant to damage than previous iPhone glass.

That’s not all that’s changed. The iPhone 12 Pro Max sports a newer look that is an ode to a previous time in the phone’s history. Squared edges made of stainless steel put this phone on par with the style of the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air. And it now comes in some new colours, like silver, gold, graphite and pacific blue.

Running on raw power

The iPhone 12 Pro Max runs on Apple’s A14 Bionic processor and a faster GPU (graphical processing unit) that work together to take the iPhone to the next level of mobile gaming. The improved performance also pays off for daily tasks, making it feel faster than ever, including for some of the newest features.

The back of the phone has a MagSafe magnet underneath that changes how you wirelessly charge the device. Through the magnet, you can better align it with MagSafe-certified accessories and wireless chargers to get the best possible charge. New accessories will come to adopt the standard, including cases, pads, docks and more.

Next-level camera

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the best camera on any phone Apple has made to date. It has features that are unique to it, and that none of the other iPhone 12 models have. The image sensor on the main lens is 47% larger, and at 12-megapixels, it means larger pixels for better light capture with every shot. That should amount to a substantial improvement in low-light photos over the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

It also sports a different image stabilization technique called Sensor Shift that moves the sensor on various axes to coincide with any physical movement on the phone itself. You also get a wider f/1.6 aperture on the main lens to capture up to 27% more light in low-light and night shooting.

Even if you shoot with the other ultrawide and telephoto lenses, you can still take advantage of another neat feature in the built-in LIDAR sensor. This helps improve autofocus in low-light settings and makes the bokeh effect look more natural anytime you shoot.

You also get the choice to shoot in Apple’s new ProRAW image format. This pro-level format is designed to retain more visual data for more precise editing after you’ve captured your image. For video, you can record footage in Dolby Vision HDR, giving you a lot of flexibility in how vivid and detailed you want your clips to look.

Ready to roll with 5G

Apple is boarding the 5G train, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max is already packed and ready to go. Wherever 5G networks go live in Canada, and then expand to cover more of the country, this phone will be equipped to take you to those faster speeds. It supports both millimetre wave and Sub-6 5G standards, moving over to LTE or 3G in areas where 5G isn’t deployed yet or coverage is spotty.

A new Smart Data mode also helps out by shifting to LTE anytime a task or app can do just fine without having to use the 5G connection and sap the battery. This is an iPhone made with the future in mind, and you will be ready when that time comes.
