Big, bold and beautiful: iPhone 12
A new sleek and stylish look
The iPhone 12 comes with a newer look that carries with it some of the iconic phone’s past heritage. Glass returns to the back to complement a brand new screen up front called Ceramic Shield, which is considered four times more resistant to damage from drops than any previous iPhone screen.
It’s also an OLED panel, moving on from the LCD panels of the past. This way, you can see deeper black levels, better contrast and peak brightness of 1,200 nits. With HDR10 and Dolby Vision support, the level of detail will look great on the 6.1-inch display.
The sides are made of flattened aluminum, bringing the iPhone back to a previous design treatment, while also making it look more uniform with the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air. You also get new colours to choose from, including black, white, blue, green and red.
Power and performance
Apple’s new A14 Bionic processor powers the iPhone 12 through tasks, making it the most efficient the company has produced. That also means a better and faster GPU (graphics processor unit) that, when put together, means a video and gaming experience unlike any other on an iPhone of this calibre. With the latest features from iOS 14, this handset is ready for anything.
Wireless charging on the iPhone 12 also has a new approach in the MagSafe system, which uses magnets under the phone’s chassis to ensure it lines up properly with MagSafe-certified accessories. This includes cases, charging pads, docks and more, so that you can snap the device on with little effort.
Camera upgrades
Apple gave the iPhone 12 camera an upgrade, particularly with the main lens. It is a 12-megapixel image sensor that has an f/1.6 aperture—the widest ever for an iPhone—which can bring in up to 27% more light. That should lead to brighter images in low-light situations. The second 12-megapixel ultrawide lens is still the same as in the previous iPhone 11, capturing a 120-degree field of view.
Night mode is available on both the rear and front lenses, letting you capture selfies at night with greater detail. Apple’s Deep Fusion computational photography system also helps out in making photos turn out better than before, making this one of the best cameras of any iPhone to date.
Entering the 5G era
The iPhone 12 also marks the first time Apple is diving into 5G network technology. This 5G-ready device is built to take advantage of next-generation speeds, supporting both millimetre wave and Sub-6 5G standards, covering both bases for a smooth transition from LTE in the years to come.
The phone has a Smart Data mode that automatically shifts to LTE when you are running apps or tasks that won’t benefit from using a 5G connection. When the 5G rollout and expansion takes place in Canada, the iPhone 12 will already be equipped to handle it.
