The iPhone that’s got it all in a smaller package

An iPhone that feels comfortable in your hands

The iPhone 15 sticks with a formula that works so well in that you get a phone that’s easy to put in your pocket, yet just as comfortable to wield in your hands, especially compared to the larger iPhone 15 Plus. You’re looking at a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, which is the same screen Apple put on the iPhone 15 Pro. Not only that, but it also gets the same Dynamic Island functionality that turns the cutout around the TrueDepth camera into an actionable widget.

Ceramic Shield glass still protects the screen, giving you some peace of mind that it can withstand at least some punishment from the daily rigours of using the phone. Screen protectors and cases can always take protection further to ensure your iPhone 15 is safe in case of accidental falls.

Safety is a theme that crosses the device in other ways, like Emergency SOS, which lets you contact someone or call first responders via satellite call when you don’t have reception. Crash Detection is another that notifies responders you may be in trouble if the phone detects a crash or collision.

Ready to act

Apple equipped the iPhone 15 with the A16 Bionic processor for a speed and performance boost over the previous iPhone 14. That not only helps make for a smoother experience when navigating through iOS, but also helps apps run better. If you’re looking at this phone as a mobile gaming device, it has the capability to be a fun way to play.

The A16 chip is also the big driver behind how Dynamic Island works. Like a pop-up notification, the cutout expands to show contextual information that you can interact with as a neat shortcut. From phone calls, maps, playback controls, Apple Pay, AirPods connections and several other notifications.

This phone also joins the rest of the iPhone 15 lineup in adopting USB-C as the new connector and charging port. It replaces the Lightning port that was standard on the iPhone for a decade, yet also brings the latest iPhones into a broader industry standard for most portable devices on the market. It opens up new possibilities for what’s possible when plugging the phone into compatible products, going beyond just docks and chargers, and moving on to accessories related to things like gaming and mobile photography.

A camera system with renewed focus

Apple brings in a new 48-megapixel main camera like that of the iPhone 14 Pro series. The extra resolution allows the main camera to also offer a 2x zoom in the absence of a true telephoto lens. This 2x mode captures a 12-megapixel image using the pixels in the centre of the frame to help you get a little closer to your subject. A 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera rounds out the rear camera array, letting you capture much more in a single frame.

The software is also getting smarter, courtesy of machine learning in the Camera app. It can recognize when a person is posing in the frame and apply portrait mode effects to add bokeh without switching over to Portrait mode first. It even works with pets and animals. You can adjust focus for portrait photos after you’ve already taken them by moving the focal point wherever you want.
