Enhance your home with mirrors

Why do you need mirrors in your home?

Mirrors provide a place to check out how you look in a new outfit, give you a last look of yourself before you walk out the door, and help you shave or apply make-up.

There are many types of mirrors, each that serves a different purpose and is designed for placement in different rooms of the home. Some are standing while others can be mounted on the wall or placed atop a vanity.

They range in size and shape, from large, full-sized rectangular standing mirrors, to small, oval-shaped vanity ones. And they can come in frames made of everything from wood to chrome, and in colours like silver, white, cappuccino, black, and bronze.

Where can you place mirrors in your home and why?

In the bathroom, mirrors help you shave, apply make-up or face cream before bedtime, do your hair, and more. In the bedroom, a full-length mirror lets you see a full outfit from every angle. And mirrors that double as jewelry armoires provide convenient storage space for your jewelry, like earrings, necklaces, and cufflinks.

Another popular place for full-length mirrors is next to entryway furniture. They not only let you get a last glance of yourself, shoes on, before leaving the house, but can also complement other furniture, adding to the style of your home.

Other mirrors can be part of the décor, making a room look bigger depending on where and how you position one, or accenting artwork, wallpaper, or paint. If you place a mirror by a window or other source of light, it can bounce to other areas, creating a lovely illuminating effect.

What are the most common types of mirrors and their features?

The most common types of mirrors include standing mirrors, full-length mirrors, jewelry armoires, vanity mirrors, and decorative or accent mirrors.

Standing mirrors come on stands and are often full-length in size. Many can tilt back and forth to achieve a desirable angle. Some also double as jewelry armoires with space inside to hang necklaces, earrings, and other cosmetic items. Some full-length mirrors can also be wall mirrors and mounted versus stand.

Vanity mirrors are usually smaller, and ideal for a vanity area or as bathroom mirrors. A backlit mirror can be illuminated manually or through touch operation, offering better visibility. Make-up enthusiasts will appreciate double-sided vanity mirrors that have 1x magnification on one side, and 3x magnification on the other, making it easier to apply eyeshadow, mascara, foundation, and more. Most also function as a lighted mirror and are extendable so you can push, pull, and position them based on what part of your face you’re working on.

Decorative mirrors and accent mirrors, meanwhile, can be large mirrors or small, and come in a variety of designs, from sleek and modern to traditional and baroque style. While they are useful for catching a glance of yourself, they can also open up smaller rooms making them appear bigger.
