FAQ About Skylanders

With 5 generations of games and more on the way, Skylanders offers hours of fun for everyone, young and old. But, with so many different characters and versions of the game, things can get a bit confusing. Check out these answers to some frequently asked questions about Skylanders.

What is Skylanders?

Skylanders is a toys-to-life video game that takes place in the Skylands Realm. A toys-to-life video game uses collectible figures that can be played in the game, plus adding new figures adds new content to the game. Skylanders games can be played on PC/Mac, video game consoles, and mobile devices.

How does Skylanders work?

Skylanders games are played by importing data from Skylanders compatible character figures. These collectible toys are placed on the Portal of Power, which reads the figures through NFC and imports the characters into the game as playable characters. The figures are also able to store data (like special powers, in-game money, etc.), allowing the character to be transported to a friend's house and used on their gaming system. Skylanders games requires a Portal of Power and at least 1 figure to play.

How does Skylanders: Swap Force work?

Swap Force figures can switch top and bottom halves, giving you the ability to create new character combinations. In order to use the Swap Force feature the game requires a new Portal of Power for Swapping, as the older Portals can't sense the top half of the new Swappable characters. The Swap Force characters do not work in previous games and the power swapping feature can only be used in the Skylanders: Swap Force game.

What else do I need to know about Skylanders?

Not all generations of Skylanders figures are compatible with older generations of the game. It's best to check the Skylanders website to see which characters will work with which games. All Skylanders figures work on any console, but the Skylanders games are console specific. Consider buying a starter pack, which has everything needed to play Skylanders, including a console specific game, a Portal of Power, 2-3 figures, and more.
