Double Mattresses
Outfit your bed with a new double mattress
What size is a double mattress and what kinds are available?
Double mattresses, also referred to as full sized mattresses or standard sized mattresses, measure 75 x 53 inches (134.5 x 190.5 cm), though some sources peg the double mattress size as 75 x 54 or 74.5 x 53 inches in size. Compare this to a next size up queen-sized mattress, which is 80 x 60 inches (152.5 x 203 cm), at least five inches wider and longer.
There are double mattresses made from memory foam, pocket coils, hybrid, quilted, and even orthopedic for those with back issues. Other features include hypo-allergenic materials, great for those with sensitive skin, and waterproof protection. Thickness can vary from ultra-thin to ultra-thick, depending on your preference. Special double sized mattresses are designed for futon bunk beds, which fold up nicely when the bed is converted to a seat.
Double mattresses are ideal for a child's room, guest bedroom, or small bedrooms where only one, up to two, people will be sleeping.
How do you choose the right double mattress for you?
Choosing the right mattress is almost like picking the right car: it has to fit and contour perfectly to you. First, consider the type: coil is best for those who toss or turn a lot at night while memory foam keeps cold sleepers warm at night, helping them sink into position to fall into a deep slumber. Gel memory foam, meanwhile, helps absorb moisture and eliminate odour, perfect for those who sweat a lot at night.
A soft level of firmness is good for side and light sleepers, while firm is best for those who sleep on their stomach or back. Medium firm, the most popular type, will suit most sleepers.
If you have sensitive skin, look for a mattress made from hypoallergenic material. If you suffer from back or neck pain, don't only look at firmness but consider even going for an orthopedic mattress.
Should you get other accessories with a double mattress?
Accessories beyond typical bedding, including a fitted and top sheet, pillows and pillowcases, aren't a necessity with double mattresses. But there are a few that are worth getting.
A mattress protector/topper fits over the mattress and under the fitted sheet to offer an extra layer of protection against spills or night-time accidents, especially important if the mattress will be used in a child's bedroom. They also protect the mattress against dirt and dust, bed bugs, and other stains, prolonging its life.
Depending on the bed frame, you might require a box spring to place under the mattress. Consider one if you choose an extra thin double mattress. But if you have a bed frame that can support a mattress directly along with a thick enough mattress, you can do without one.
