Satisfy laundry needs with a washer and dryer combo
With washer dryer combos, you can save space and clean and dry clothes in a single unit.
What are washer dryer combos?
Washer dryer combos come in two forms: stackable units with the washing machine at the top and the dryer on the bottom, or all-in-one units that can both wash and dry in the same drum, using the same machine.
Available from all major brands, they have obvious space-saving benefits while also eliminating the need to be vented since most models use condensation drying versus forced air. They can be installed completely out of the way in a closet, a bathroom, or even flush under the counter in a kitchen. All they require is power and a cold-water hookup.
Are washer dryer combos good?
Washer dryer combos are great option for smaller homes and households with minimal washing needs, condo dwellers, or those who live in an apartment or small home without dedicated laundry areas and want to avoid using a laundromat. They are also useful for an RV, boat, extra guest house, or other living quarters.
They are relatively easy to install, positioned nearby a cold-water connection source and 120V power outlet. For single individuals or households with up to two people, or those who don't tend to have a ton of laundry, washer dryer combos can be a great option. They are smaller to accommodate small loads, with drying that takes a bit longer than usual. But they also use less water.
As an alternative to grabbing a stack of quarters to go to the laundromat or losing valuable living space to set up a full washer and dryer pair, washer dryer combos are a good option.
How do washer dryer combos work?
Washer dryer combos work by allowing you to adjust the cycle from the front panel. Add a load of clothing and choose the desired wash cycle. Once finished, switch to drying mode and you can dry that same load without removing the items (unless you want to quickly fluff them out to prevent shrinkage or wrinkles). Speaking of which, you need to remove the clothing quickly since failing to do so can lead to wrinkles given that the machine uses condensation to dry.
Also keep in mind that items might still feel wet when you take them out after a dry cycle because of the humidity inside the drum. Give them a shake and they should quickly dry off.
How do you install washer dryer combos in an apartment?
Installing a washer dryer combo requires access to the hot and cold-water lines and drain pipe. Those who are knowledgeable and comfortable doing it themselves can hook the machine up by attaching the machine to new lines, though this might require removing a countertop if it's going in the kitchen, for example, and cutting holes in the side to run them. Otherwise, you might want to opt for professional installation.
The benefit of using a washer dryer combo is that you don't need a rear vent, which makes them a good option for apartments, RVs, and small homes without the space for a dedicated laundry room and/or vent hookups.
How do you clean washer dryer combos?
Just like with standard washers and dryers, you need to maintain and clean washer dryer combos. This includes cleaning the exterior with mild soap and warm water to eliminate any dirt, dust, and grime, as well as the drum inside. You can use cleaning tabs for the latter, a mix of vinegar and baking soda, or even bleach to ensure that there isn't any mold growth and lingering odours.
Since the drying function only uses condensation and a washer dryer combo ventless design is the norm, there isn't a lint trap to clean out like with standard dryers. It is a good idea, however, to periodically check the drain pump filter to ensure lint hasn't accumulated there over time.
If the unit has a self-cleaning function, runs that every few months to ensure there's no residue build-up inside.
