What are the advantages of buying a space heater?
A space heater is useful small appliance during the cold winter months, especially if you live in an apartment building or basement apartment without separate control of the thermostat. They are good for emergencies, like if there's an issue with your home's furnace, and can add supplemental heat to that one spot that's always colder than everywhere else in the house, like the basement. There might also be one person in the family who likes things warmer than others, in which case a portable heater can be placed in their bedroom for extra heat.
Space heaters can also help thaw out frozen pipes, a common occurrence in some homes during the sub-zero Canadian winter nights.
Buying space heaters on sale means you can grab one for a significant discount. Even if you don't have a specific use for a space heater at the moment, taking advantage of heaters deals may pay off in spades in the future.
What portable heater types are available on sale?
There are four main types of portable heaters: space, ceramic, infrared, and radiator. The term portable heater is often used synonymously with space heater. These small appliances are powered by electricity and designed to heat a small-to-medium-sized space. Some might use gas, propane, or wood pellets, but ones designed for use inside the home will likely have AC power cords.
Infrared heaters pass electricity through a conductive wire, which heats up and, in turn, heats the space. Ceramic heaters, meanwhile, uses electricity to heat a ceramic element inside. They tend to heat up quickly, are considered safe since there's no risk of fire, and are often more energy efficient. However, there should be proper ventilation in the room.
Finally, with radiator heaters, electricity heats oil inside and transfers it to the air to keep you warm.
What features should you look for in a space heater?
Size is the most important consideration, as you want the portable heater to sufficiently heat the space for which it's intended. If it's meant for an entire room, you'll need something big and powerful, like a floor-standing tower model. If it's to sit on your home office desk, a desktop portable model should suit fine. One that oscillates is useful to reach every corner of a room.
Tip-over, tilt, and overheating protection are valuable, especially if you have pets and/or young children. Some portable heaters have cooling modes, offering more bang for your buck since you can use them as portable fans in the summer, too. A timer helps to kick on a heater and warm a space before you enter, then turn off at night. Adjustable thermostat control is also useful so you can tweak the intensity as needed.
Some space heaters mount on the wall to save floor space. Conversely, if you want to move it from room to room, look for a compact and lightweight portable heater with a built-in handle for that purpose.
